Band Rocks!

The Pride of the Beaches Grandstands in DC!
That’s right; the Fletcher High School Marching Band has been selected to represent the state of Florida in the 2008 National Independence Day Parade in Washington, DC. The process started when Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton submitted names of three area bands to the Parade Selection Committee for consideration. FHS Bands Director Jonathon Maerkl followed up with submission of a show tape and official application and the rest – as they say – is history! We ARE the official band from the state and will march on July 4th on Capitol Hill in the nationally televised event, which typically draws over 1 million spectators!

According to Maerkl, this top spot doesn’t come without a lot of hard work and preparation. This year at Summer Band Camp students learned 50 sets as opposed to the usual 20-25. They will attend competitions in Middleburg on October 13th and St. Augustine on October 27th and participate in numerous competitions and exhibitions throughout the year to fine tune their performances. An increased number of area performances will give the band more playing time as well as more exposure in the area community, which should help achieve the lofty fundraising goal of $60,000 - $75,000 to cover week-long event participation expenses.

This year’s marching show is entitled "Heroes" and features two fictional heroes: Link from The Legend of Zelda, and Batman. The band then recognizes our real everyday heroes with a musical selection entitled "Flame of Eternal Glory" to honor our firefighters.

The Fletcher High School Band program consists of over 100 students who participate in numerous ensembles including marching band, symphonic band, wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, winter guard, and indoor drumline. Many of our students also participate and perform at Florida Bandmasters Association Events such as All-State, All-District, and Solo/Ensemble Music Performance Assessment.

Major fundraising activities will kick off for the DC trip at the conclusion of marching season, but contributions will be accepted at any time. If you are interested in being of sponsor, email Jace at Jace4fletcher@att.net.
